The Helianthus Story

Helianthus Prairie Design is a studio made up of landscape architects and landscape ecologists united by our love of the plant and animal species that inhabit the tall grass prairies of the central United States and Canada. While similar grass lands and savannahs exist around the globe the beautiful and unique wildflowers, and the majestic tall grasses and animal species of the North American Prairie are unique in their diversity, and have left a legacy that includes some of the most productive farmland on Earth. Spend some time in these landscapes and you will understand too why we love them so much.

These plant communities support some iconic species like the Monarch butterfly, as well as a host of other important butterflies, birds, bees, wasps, moths and many other species. Prairie plantings are better suited to a midwestern climate, and require less water and maintenance while providing important habitat for native insects and birds. As many species of pollinators like bees and butterflies, as well as other animals experience stresses from habitat loss and other environmental factors, it is important that we create diverse landscapes that can help support these species.

Helianthus is commited to creating beautiful, functional, and sustainable prairie landscape plantings that can improve the appearance and function of your property

Featured Critters

Hummingbird Moth

This unique moth visits flowers to drink nectar with its long proboscis. Their coloration, hovering behavior, quicky beating wings, and day time activity cause them to be frequently misidentified as their namesake.

Bumble Bees

Many species of bummble bees will visit prairie plants to obtain nectar. These fuzzy, hard-working pollinators collect pollen in pouches or 'baskets' on their hind legs.
